Burnbrae celebrates ‘outstanding’ inspection result

Falkirk’s Burnbrae care home has passed an unannounced inspection with flying colours, including two ‘Very Good’ evaluations and one coveted ‘Excellent’ rating from the Care Inspectorate.

The Falkirk Council owned care home, which supports up to 28 older people in the quiet residential area overlooking Dollar Park, received an unannounced inspection on 25 and 26 November.

Through speaking with residents, family, members, staff and visiting professionals, the inspector assessed the homes’ support for wellbeing, leadership, and environment.

The inspection report has commended the support available for residents as ‘Excellent’, the highest rating on the regulator’s six-point scale, which is awarded to examples of care that is “sector leading” and “outstandingly high quality.”

The team at Burnbrae were praised for their work to reduce the number of fall-related injuries within the home, with all council-run homes in Falkirk now working with physiotherapy colleagues to get residents as active as possible.

The inspectorate found “staff were extremely patient, kind and very much encouraged and supported people to become involved in making decisions about their care.” The creative and flexible approach of staff was noted, with the team ensuring resident wishes were fulfilled and recorded.

When enjoying activities in the home or trips out and about, the team ensured photographs were taken to capture mementos of the day and to include within the home’s newsletter, which allows other residents and family and friends to keep up with their loved ones from afar if needed.

The high level of care and welcoming environment were commended by those in the home, with one resident telling the inspectorate “If you need to be in care, this is the place to be.” A family member added “it feels nice and relaxed, and homely.”

Gail Woodcock, Chief Officer, Falkirk Health and Social Care Partnership said: “Achieving an ‘Excellent’ rating is a fantastic accomplishment and a credit to the Burnbrae team. Their creativity, kindness, and commitment to continuous improvement set an example of what great care looks like. We couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve achieved.”

The inspection went on to praise Burnbrae for its “significant strengths” in leadership and the way care is planned. The home offers different ways for people, families, and carers to discuss daily life, raise concerns or share ideas for improvement.

Senior staff and management were noted to have embedded quality improvement initiatives within their routine work, allowing all staff to contribute to the home’s “dynamic and responsive” approach to continual improvement.
